Jake, a 10-year-old lab mix, had spent the previous six months at a local boarding kennel, waiting for a family who never came back.
We wanted to help him find a new, improved family, so he came to Roice-Hurst.
When a routine test showed that Jake had an advanced case of heartworm – permanently damaging his heart – we feared that finding a home for a senior dog with a life-threatening condition might be an insurmountable challenge.
However, one of our wonderful volunteers, Linda Bailey, met Jake and heard his story. She vowed that Jake would spend the rest of his life at home with her, no matter the financial or emotional cost.
Linda couldn’t have known that, instead of giving her boy a loving home for a few more years, she would only have him a few more weeks. Jake’s heart gave out the end of November of 2011. He would never know how much his sweet face and inspiring story moved donors to give so generously and to help us find great moms like Linda for other special needs pets.
The holidays came and went, but we just couldn’t get Jake of our minds. We started thinking about all the other dogs and cats with serious medical needs that we’ve raised funds for on a case by case basis.
So, we created a special fund to honor the memory of this special boy and to help with the costs of the next major surgery, rehabilitation, costly medication, or other critical need.
Jake, wherever you are over the Rainbow Bridge, know that we love you, we thank you, and you’re in our hearts forever. And also know that your inspiration will continue on to help other pets with serious medical problems.
Please help us to continue to help pets like Jake and others by adopting, fostering, or contibuting to our programs, like Jake’s Fund. With your help, we can continue to save one life at a time. Thank you.
